U is for Unique, a certain je ne sais quoi, an elusive quality, something that you can’t quite put your finger on. That batch of elements and characteristics that makes a person special, a situation extraordinary, an object that becomes special. Something or someone that is different, particular, magical.
What makes a person, a situation, an object, unique? One of its kind, unlike anything else? Are we are unique? Our bodies certainly are, especially our brains. Our emotions unique? You can feel angry or happy but is it every exactly what someone else is feeling? Does it have to do with our childhood? Our perspective?
We are constantly submitted to “unique” things. The ultimate experience, the one-of-a-kind object, it seems that being unique or having the unique is something we strive for. Or at least some of us do. But how long does the uniqueness last? We certainly get tired of things very quickly. And what is unique is very often copied to excess, defeating the initial purpose.
With U is for Unique, we wonder about this elusive quality. I think in the end, being unique translates to being authentic, being yourself. Not being swayed by your surroundings. And never striving to be unique as this will backfire, it will seem forced and fake.
